You Said, We Did
How your voice has made a difference
This page provides an opportunity to see the valuable feedback received from students across a wide range of communication channels, and to see what the OU has done in response.
Please note this video is now a couple of years old so some people no longer have the same title. The current Students Association leadership can be seen on their website.
Choose a topic from the drop-down list below to see how students can have an impact on their university experience and be empowered to help shape the University. Next time you are asked to give your opinion, you know that the OU is taking this feedback seriously and will respond.

There was a lack of practical, hands-on experience such as field days and residential schools.
We did...
We are giving opportunities for field learning to more students - by piloting a scheme to open up under-subscribed tutor-led field trips to students on other, related modules.

You would like opportunities to learn GIS skills.
We did...
A GIS topic will form part of a new module, S831 'Environmental Science challenges', for the Integrated Master of Environmental Science degree. We also plan to introduce more GIS teaching at Level 2 in the near future.

Provide better signposting of opportunities to gain experience - such as field trips, training events, placements, volunteering, internships and so on.
We did...
We recently appointed an Employability Lead for our School, who works with the STEM Employability liaison to ensure employability is targeted in our curriculum. They are scoping a variety of opportunities for S831 and will extend these to other module teams as appropriate.

You would like more opportunities to have a say in issues that matter to you in your studies.
We did...
We very much welcome your feedback and comments. There are a number of ways that you can let your voice be heard: in module and the NSS survey, via student consultative forums, via the student representatives on the Board of Studies, as well as working with staff on Student Partnership projects. These are all highlighted on the Science study site which you can find under the ‘Study’ tab on your StudentHome page.

You liked face-to-face tutorials and would like them to continue, but there often is not enough coverage to make attendance easy and they often have low attendance. You suggested day schools might make a more attractive option.
We did...
We will continue to offer a mix of face-to-face and online tutorials, and continue to monitor attendance data to inform our tuition strategy. We are considering the possibility of larger events where more than one mathematics or statistics tutorial is held at the same time and in the same place. We had added information about the value of attending tutorials to all our module websites and will continue to encourage attendance.

Online tutorials are convenient but are often more limited than face-to-face events.
We did...
We will continue to support tutors in making the most of the available online systems and developing appropriate teaching skills. We will continue to investigate what works best for online tutorials.
