More relevant learning that improves key metrics in attainment and retention


What did students say?

Students wanted to see their level 1 modules focus on the specific subjects that they are studying, rather than a generalist approach. This inspired SSGS to employ a strand-based approach when replacing a core level 1 module, D103, with the new D113, now three years into presentation.


What is a strand-based approach?

After completing a 20-point introductory start to the module, students could then study more qualification-focused content for the remaining 40 points of the module by following one of three strands most relevant to their overall qualification: one focused on Sociology, Religious Studies and Generic Social Sciences, another focused on Politics, International Relations and Economics, and a third focused on Environmental Studies, Geography and Development Studies. Three distinct strands, each formed of a related group of subjects with transferrable knowledge and skillsets, give students an early opportunity to shape their learning experience and motivate their studies.


Was it successful?

Shifting to a strand-based approach for D113 has seen significant successes for SSGS students, with completion rates rising almost seven percentage points to 71.8%, and an eight-percentage point rise in pass rate to 69.8%. Other modules in SSGS, such as the upcoming D112, will be hoping to replicate D113’s success by applying reflections for each block emphasising how what they have learnt is relevant to students’ specific qualification pathways. This has a synergistic approach with D113, which many students will go on to study after D112: the groundwork laid in D112 will help inform students’ choice of strand on D113.


SSGS has really enjoyed working on and delivering D113 to students and feels that it directly addresses a specific request from students. We continue to welcome feedback on it and our wider curriculum and conduct regular student consultations to gather this.
