Accessibility statement

This page provides an opportunity to see the valuable feedback received from students across a wide range of communication channels, and to see what the OU has done in response.

Please note this video is now a couple of years old so some people no longer have the same title. The current Students Association leadership can be seen on their website.

Choose a topic from the drop-down list below to see how students can have an impact on their university experience and be empowered to help shape the University. Next time you are asked to give your opinion, you know that the OU is taking this feedback seriously and will respond.

You would like to see examples of the assignments that you are being asked to submit.

We did...

We will work with colleagues across the school and try to get this in place for 2020

A lack of consistency in some areas of modules, such as the use of titles or a 5% 'buffer' is really confusing and unnecessary.

We did...

We agree. We will be reviewing all modules for 2020

There are some things that we could do to help you as 'full time' students including. Having 1 tutor for both TMAs Having an extra 'support' tutor, if studying FT Spacing the TMAs and EMAs further apart Joint study calendar.

We did...

We have worked to set up forums for students studying full time but need to ensure that this is consistent across the school. We will do what we can regarding the other ideas but would need some OU wide changes to address some. We have represented your views at OU level group exploring this. We will also be sharing the hints and tips for full time study that students shared with new students studying full time.

It would be good if we could switch more easily between study routes on some qualifications.

We did...

We have added a new Broad Engineering route to the BEng and MEng, which contains few restrictions on module choice within the engineering subject area. We have also reformed our Design and Innovation degree to have two routes (broadly arts and technical) rather than four more narrowly defined ones .

We would like to have the Women in Engineering Conference in a more central location.

We did...

We hosted the conference in 2019 at Aston University Conference Centre, rather than Walton Hall and will do so again in 2020. We have also opened the conference up for attendance by male as well as female participation in engineering.

You wanted more opportunities to interact with other students and attend tutorials.

We did...

We introduced in-line student fora which are more integrated with module materials, enquiry-based learning and peer support structures. Some modules have increased the number of tutorials or revised the tuition strategy.

You wanted clearer and more consistent advice on assessment in specific modules.

We did...

Where this issues has arisen, we will be briefing associate lecturers on assessment, simplifying assessment guidance and in some modules, introducing more end-of-module assessment tutorials.

You wanted more time to prepare assignments including the end-of-module assessment. Workload was considered too high on one module.

We did...

In modules where this point was raised, break weeks have been incorporated and the assessment strategy has been revised to provide more time. Workload is being revised on one module.
